Here is a picture of the London plane trees lining a plaza by the Campaile (clock tower). I like to call them "toes" trees because once they are pruned--like now--their branches look like they all end in knobby toes. For a slide show of UC Berkeley's trees go here.

what a bizarre park. those look like pollarded sycamore or plane trees. The limbs are removed each year from the stubby tops. In Europe, this was practiced as a way to get firewood from trees without cutting them down entirely. I think it looks pretty cruel.
